Renaissance Masterpieces

Early Church music drew readily on both melodies and words from worldly songs, but in 1562 the Roman Catholic counter-reformational Council of Trent put an end to this relaxed practice. Words and music were to be pure in every way, and the text was to be not intricate and interwoven, but clear and intelligible to the listener. This concert presents great music written both before this edict and in response to it.
